LANTRA training courses qualify young adults to work in land-based industry

As part of our Pathways to Adulthood programme, Dorset Wellbeing has delivered a series of LANTRA-accredited practical training courses every half term, providing young adults 16+ with industry-recognised qualifications in arboriculture, land-based activities and grounds maintenance.

The courses have covered:

  • Brushcutters

  • Handheld hedge trimmers

  • Powered pole pruners

  • Leaf blowers

  • Wood chippers

  • Ride-on and pedestrian mowers

These qualifications are universally recognised across the land-based sector and provide certification that individuals have received training in the safe and effective operation of professional equipment.

Each course combines classroom-based learning with practical assessment, allowing participants to develop an understanding of equipment checks, maintenance, safe working practices and correct operating techniques. For participants with limited literacy skills, Dorset Wellbeing has developed bespoke learning resources to help every participant understand the theory elements of the courses, resulting in a full pass rate across the year.

The qualifications gained through these courses are relevant to a variety of industries and job roles, and can be included in employment applications, CVs and progression portfolios. Employers within grounds maintenance, landscaping, estate management, forestry, countryside services, local authorities and environmental conservation organisations often require staff to hold evidence of training before operating machinery.

For young people considering careers in these sectors, gaining qualifications at an early stage can provide a useful foundation when applying for apprenticeships, work placements and entry-level employment opportunities. The certificates also support progression into further vocational training and additional land-based qualifications.

Throughout the year, the courses have been delivered as part of Dorset Wellbeing's wider commitment to providing practical learning opportunities that connect education with real-world skills. The half-term schedule has enabled participants from across the organisation to access training alongside their regular programmes, building a portfolio of qualifications over time.

As the programme continues, Dorset Wellbeing intends to maintain opportunities for young people to gain industry-recognised training that reflects the skills and standards used within the land-based and grounds maintenance sectors.
